was founded in 1999 by Prof. Alar
Karis and
Prof. Eero Vasar, both scientists at the University of Tartu, Estonia.
An increasing demand for appropriate animal models for study of human diseases as well
as an expertise have prompted the
founders to start the Visgenyx company. Visgenyx unites knowledge of molecular and cell
biologists, neurobiologists and physiologists thereby ensuring the high scientific
quality of the services provided.
Prof. Alar Karis, DVM, Ph.D. is the Head of of the Department of Gene Technologies of
Tartu University. He is an expert in generation of transgenic and
knock-out mice and has
a longstanding experience in the fields of cell and developmental biology.
Prof. Dr. Eero Vasar, MD, Ph.D. is the Head of the Department of Physiology at the
University of Tartu. He has a broad experience in physiology and neurosciences.
Indrek Toots, managing director, has an experience in development and production of
monoclonal antibodies, diagnostic kits and other bioproducts.
Visgenyx has dedicated its own R&D activities to fighting different forms of
neurodegradative and other chronic human diseases using animal models for development
of diagnostic and therapeutic methods.
A recent research program is focusing on
developing transgenic animals for gene polymorphism studies and biopharmaceutical
production.
